first photos with 1DSmIII

I finally tracked down a 1DSmIII camera body (from Downtown Camera, Toronto) to replace the body I had stolen back in November when I was in Argentina. These are my first photos with the 1DSmIII - from this morning. The 1DSmIII body has some outstanding upgrades over its predecessors. Notable are a bright viewfinder, large LCD, liveview (wow), auto sensor cleaner (thanks!), smoothest autofocus I've seen and, of course, the huge file size (equals about a 60mb TIFF). I can't wait to put this body through the paces and tell you what I think!

  1. You really dig the liveview or was the "wow" sarcasm?

I like it for lining up grads. I've used it a couple times to check focus too.

  2. Craig, I really do like the liveview feature. I'm not sure I'll use it often, but there will be times when it's advantageous.

First, there's an option with liveview to overlay a grid - very handy for checking if the horizon is straight (I always seem to get my horizons crooked... must be from drinking too much beer when I was younger).

Second, I like that I can check the composition and overall impact of the photo. If a photo has impact even when small, it's probably a winner (assuming it's sharp). I often make final edits between two similarly composed photos by judging them as thumbnails - the one that jumps out at me more I keep.

Hope all is well and you're getting out shooting!
    cheers,
    Ethan-

    Great resolution!

I'm catching up with all of your photos I missed in the past little while. I was in Algonquin a week before you were there. Such magical sceneries!

  5. Hey again, hope the new job and house are working out well for ya.

Have you ever shot any birds of paradise? I was watching the Planet Earth documentary and there was a segment about them... they blew me away. First time birds had done so.

    Just curious.

  6. Thanks for the kind words Titka, Chris and Craig!

Craig, I've watched that Planet Earth episode about 10 times.... some of the best bird video ever shot. Haven't had a chance to photograph them yet, but someday!
